More Than a Game
We also caught this earlier in the week. I really enjoyed it. Basketball content notwithstanding, there is a great narrative here. A lot of tear-jerky sports moments if that’s your thing. Watching a kid in his early tweens throw down a fast break dunk in-game is pretty existential. Well edited, had a nice flow to it. I’ve got a soft spot for documentaries that end with little blurbs telling you what dudes have been upto since shooting ended.

The Men Who Stare at Goats
We saw this last night, and it was pretty whatever. Clooney is jokes, Jeff Bridges brings something, but Ewan McGregor’s “american accent” was too horrible (and he narrates the majority of the story.) Really underwhelming, a few funny moments that weren’t spoiled in the trailer, and Kevin Spacey was totally forgettable. Also a total lack of foreshadowed basketball content, which was a bummer.

Saw the movie Mammoth last night at the Ridge Theatre. Really happy that I managed to get to at least one VIFF showing. It was really good. They really nail down the now aesthetic; I’ve never seen a movie that looks so perfectly current. Gael Garcia Bernal plays a web 2.0 entrepreneur about to cash in on some serious scrills, and his clothes have that nouveau riche/new cool vibe to them. It was as if dude’s first paycheck went to buying new sneakers and jeans and comme des garcons polos. Michelle Williams was great. Babe singers on the soundtrack, globalization and shit.

Saw the new Coen bros. movie, A Serious Man, on Tuesday night thanks to RJ and fam. It was great. Super existential. Really well shot; 1967 Minnesota never looked so good. Dudes have been nothing but consistent in their output of late.

Because she got a great ass, and you got your head… all the way up it!
We watched Heat last night, and I forgot how great it is. The soundtrack is basically the future music we listen to today. It’s the best movie. Here are some screenshots of my favourite scene.
