I was looking forward to seeing these guys for a milli, and then last night they finally came. They opened the show in their “Jim and Derrick” alter-egos, aka manudes dressed in randy river. This was funny, until after only 10 minutes in character they put on an (available for download) episode of their television show (you can watch it here) and left without saying bye!
Now it turns out they doubledipped and had to perform with Comedy Death Ray the same night, but how shitty is it to headline a bill and then leave with less than 30 minutes elapsed in the show? My friend Ira was at the CDR show, and he said they sang one song before putting the same videotape on.
If not for the other acts, including the asian girl from knocked up (“wanna trade boyfriends with me? just kidding”) who was really good, and some guy doing a paul-giamotti-as-john-adams-in-a-made-for-tv-movie impression between bits, this would have been a complete bust.
Still they totally mailed it in for a paycheck, and not in a post-ironic “haha they played a joke on us, they’re so anti-comedy they’re comedy” manner either. Shame on them, I had really been looking forward to this show.
On a brighter note, I had never been to the Firehall Theatre on Cordova, and it was really nice inside and has great bathrooms.
